Carlisle United have been drawn away to League Two rivals Plymouth Argyle in the first round of the FA Cup.

The draw, made live on the BBC last night, pitted Keith Curle’s side against Derek Adams’ table-toppers at Home Park.

And that means that United and their supporters will have to make another 780-mile round trip to Devon for the tie, which is set to be played over the weekend of November 7 and 8.

The journey that they will have to make to take on Argyle is the longest away trip in the entire Football League.

But manager Curle said the lengthy trek will hold no fear for him and his side.

“It’s the FA Cup and it’s a fantastic competition – whoever you are drawn to play and wherever you are drawn to play them,” he said.

“Make no mistake about it, we will go there to win. We showed in the first half earlier in the season that we can cause them problems and, if anything, we have improved and grown as a team since we were last there. There is certainly nothing for us to be scared of.”

The game in just over a fortnight will be the Blues’ second trip down the south west coast so far this season.

Back in August, Curle’s side suffered their first defeat of the campaign there, when a double from former United loanee Jake Jervis and strikes from Reuben Reid and Graham Carey crushed the visitors.

Joe Thompson nodded in Carlisle’s consolation in that 4-1 defeat, which was watched by 169 travelling fans.

And Curle believes that this tie, combined with the amount of southern-based teams in League Two, means United will be right up there among the clubs who have had the most travelling to do in a single season.

“It’s another long journey but we’ve embraced that this season,” he added. “We make sure we prepare properly and we are used to the way we have to start to get ourselves ready from the moment we leave Brunton Park.

“In terms of miles covered, we certainly aren’t doing things by halves. It would be interesting to get someone with the statistics to hand to tally up how close we’re getting to becoming the Football League club that has had to cover most miles in domestic competitions in a single season.

“I wouldn’t think we’ll be too far away from whatever that figure is now.”

Carlisle also faced an away trip in the first round of the FA Cup last season, when they were beaten 2-1 by Peterborough United.

Elsewhere in the draw, the lowest-ranked team left in the competition, Didcot Town, were drawn at home to League Two outfit Exeter City. Didcot were one of 32 non-league teams left in draw.

FC United of Manchester, meanwhile, will host League One side Chesterfield and Salford City – who are part-owned by ex-Man United stars Gary and Phil Neville, Nicky Butt, Paul Scholes and Ryan Giggs – welcome Notts County to Moor Lane.
