Gavin Skelton has promised his Queen of the South side will give Carlisle United a serious work-out in today's behind-closed-doors friendly.

The game is United's first encounter of pre-season with Keith Curle likely to include several trialists in an experimental line-up.

Scottish Championship side Queens got their own pre-season programme under way last week and former Workington boss Skelton says it is another important game for his side.

"It's still early doors, but we're only one week and a half away from competitive football," said the ex-Gretna favourite.

"The League Cup comes early for us and I'm looking towards that.

"We've had one game against Dalbeattie last Friday, where everyone got 45 minutes, and I'll look to give some of them a bit longer than that against Carlisle.

"We've got a young side, quite a few have come through the system, and it's exciting, there's a lot of enthusiasm there along with the experienced boys we have.

"I'll be taking it as seriously as any game. I'm a Carlisle fan, and it's always nice to be back for a game against the club, albeit behind closed doors."

Skelton said he is unsure exactly how United will approach the game, with Curle keen to put some early pre-season ideas into practice.

Carlisle follow this afternoon's game with another friendly at Kendal tomorrow (kick-off 7.45pm), which gives fans the chance to see some of Curle's eight new signings for the first time.

Skelton said: "I'm focusing on our preparation, but I respect the Carlisle manager, the coaching staff and the club.

"They've invested in a lot of new signings and they'll be hoping to kick on."

Skelton also confirmed that summer signing Steven Rigg, who was released by United at the end of last season, will play some part today.

"Steven will be involved," Skelton said. "He's done great and settled in well so far."
