Charlie Wyke says tonight’s mammoth trip to Plymouth is the perfect chance for Carlisle United to prove they can go the distance in League Two.

The Blues are aiming to make it four games unbeaten from the start of the season when they face the Pilgrims (Home Park, 7.45pm).

It is the longest trek of the campaign for Carlisle and their fans, around 80 of whom are expected to make the 780-mile round trip.

And striker Wyke, who opened his goalscoring account against Cambridge on Saturday, says Keith Curle’s side are ready to show they can add consistency to their game.

The 22-year-old said: “The gaffer said that last year we would go three games unbeaten, and then something would happen and we’d get beat.

“But it feels like things have changed now and hopefully we can go to Plymouth and get a point or three.

“Plymouth are a strong and physical team and it’s not the shortest of journeys but we will be positive.”

Manager Curle is likely to be without injured defender David Atkinson tonight, but his ex-Middlesbrough tema-mate Wyke is hoping to hold onto his place after his strike three days ago.

“It’s good to get off the mark so early and I want to progress now and see how many I can get,” Wyke added.

“Doing it alongside Jabo [Ibehre], who is on fire at the minute, is only going to help me and the team.

“There’s a great vibe in training at the minute and you can see everybody’s excited. We know if [Curle] changes the team we’ve got other good players who can step in.

“It’s going to take a bit of time to be 100 per cent, but it’s exciting times with the way the gaffer wants us to play.”

Curle, meanwhile, has heaped praise on the Blues fans making the long trip to Devon today.

The United boss said: “From me it’s a massive thank-you for their support. I won’t say I’m getting used to that level of commitment, but I’m starting to expect it.

“Myself, the staff and the players very much appreciate the effort they are putting in. And we won’t let them down from lack of effort, that’s guaranteed.”

On tonight’s test against Derek Adams’ side, Curle added: “Plymouth are another rebuilt team, with a new manager who will be finding his feet with his players.

“Every game is going to be a test but we’ve got building blocks in place for what we want to be about as a team and a club.”

Argyle’s former Carlisle loan striker Jake Jervis could miss out with a groin injury.

Carlisle have been allocated 1,013 tickets for the trip to Hartlepool on Saturday, August 29.

They are on sale to season-ticket holders today and tomorrow and go on general sale from Thursday.

Prices are £20 adults, £10 concessions.
