Workington Comets owner Laura Morgan fears last week’s Brexit vote could be ‘another nail in the coffin’ for British speedway.

Morgan knows all too well the difficulty of securing visas for riders coming into the UK from outside the European Union, with Australian rider Mason Campton ruled out of last season due to strict new criteria.

She is worried that should Britain leave the EU those rules could be expanded and affect riders like Comets’ Danish stars Kenneth Hansen, Rasmus Jensen and Claus Vissing in the future.

That could leave clubs like Workington reliant on scarce British talent and could also mean British riders facing similar obstacles to race for teams in other countries.

She said: “It worries me tremendously because although I’m not greatly into politics, if I was to pick one reason to vote in it was the hassle I’ve had with visas before.

“This year we would potentially have needed five visas and it’s not just the cost, you can’t cope with that number.

“At the moment they’re protecting EU riders but now they’re going to be protecting British riders and we just don’t have enough to make the league work.

“It could be another nail in the coffin for British speedway and because of my personal experiences with Mason it makes me very worried.”

Morgan hopes to take her mind off the uncertainty when they host table-topping Glasgow tomorrow night (7pm start), who boast ex-Comets Richard Lawson and Rene Bach in their line-up.

The two sides’ fortunes this week could not have been more different, with Comets succumbing to a heavy defeat at Berwick on Monday while Glasgow defeated fierce rivals Edinburgh on Wednes- day.

Morgan said: “It’s a good opportunity to gain back some faith from the supporters, who in general have been very fair with us after Monday.

“You always feel like you owe them one after a bad defeat like that so let’s hope we can send the Tigers home with their tails between their legs.

“We always said that if Rene signed for someone else we’d fear him when he came back so it should make for some exciting racing.”
