Workington Comets star Ricky Wells will represent the club in the Premier League Riders Championship next month.

The new Comets No1 has been drawn in the competition, which will be held at Sheffield's Owlerton Stadium on Sunday, September 6.

Among those lining up alongside the American ace will be local boys Richard Lawson and Craig Cook, for Glasgow and Edinburgh respectively, and last season's Comets skipper Josh Grajczonek for Somerset.

Workington team manager Tony Jackson said he hoped Wells' track knowledge of his old stomping ground could help him to at least a top six finish.

He said: "Ricky's a gater and he's shown what he can do against tough competition this year. Everybody in the competition he has beaten at some point or another.

"People like Craig Cook and Danny King immediately stand out as favourites but at the end of the day I would like to think he can get into the top six and then after that if you get a good gate anything can happen.

"Again it looks a class field and it just shows what a good product the Premier League is, you've got people in that rode in the world cup.

"It's always one of the best meetings of the season and this year looks no different."

Club legend Carl Stonehewer won the competition in 2000 and 2001 in Comets colours, while former Workington rider James Wright also clinched the title in 2007.

The full line-up for the event is Robert Lambert (Peterborough), Richard Lawson (Glasgow), Nick Morris (Glasgow), Danny King (Ipswich), Steve Worrall (Newcastle), Craig Cook (Edinburgh), Ricky Wells (Workington), Sam Masters (Edinburgh), Matej Kus (Redcar), Thomas Jorgensen (Berwick), Brady Kurtz (Somerset), Jason Garrity (Sheffield), Josh Grajczonek (Somerset), Ryan Douglas (Scunthorpe), Kyle Newman (Plymouth) and Edward Kennett (Rye House).
