Workington Comets hope to seize their last chance for an away win tonight when they travel to Premier League basement boys Redcar.

Comets thumped the Bears 56-36 at the Media Prima Arena in the season-opening challenge match and were leading the fixture when it was originally scheduled in May before it was abandoned after four heats.

But despite Redcar’s struggles this season, team manager Tony Jackson admitted his side can ill afford to be complacent as the hosts have lined up a pair of strong guests in Steve Worrall and Nike Luna.

Jackson said: “Worrall goes well and Luna scored about 13 when he was there with Scunthorpe so I guess we’ll find out if that was a one off.

“We’ve got a reasonable record there and have scored a number of wins there over the years. We won there in the opening challenge match of the season but they’ve beaten Edinburgh and Somerset at home since then so, on their day, they can do it.”

He added: “When we originally raced them in May and it was called off after four heats – I think we’d have won that one.

“It’s the last chance for an away win. We are where we are but hopefully we can finish on a high and get that win for the league position.”

And Comets will rev into action with a guest of their own, Richard Hall replacing the injured Rusty Harrison after a respectable performance against Workington on Saturday.

The visitors will also utilise rider replacement for Rene Bach, who will be racing in a Swedish league play-off match.

“Of the people that are available, Richard was the best,” said Jackson. “He’s done guest appearances for a few clubs this season and he always likes to score points at Redcar.

“Matt Williamson is also back and good to go. How he walked away from his crash on Saturday I’ll never know but he’s well up for it.”

Meanwhile, an open forum meeting about the sport’s long-term future in the town will be held at the Waverley Hotel in Workington tomorrow. It starts at 7pm.
