Workington Comets chief Laura Morgan believes there is plenty to excite supporters ahead of a season opening double-header against Newcastle this weekend.

They will contest the Ian Thomas Shield over two legs against the Diamonds, the first leg at home tomorrow night (7pm start) with the reverse fixture 24 hours later at Newcastle’s Brough Park (6.30pm start).

Comets fans will see Mason Campton and Adam Roynon return after spells away from the club, while Claus Vissing will make his debut.

"I'm really excited to see how the guys go as a team," said Morgan.

"On the first meeting you always look forward to seeing how many people come.

"We've got a free creme egg for every child who comes through the turnstiles.

"Both Kenneth and Ricky have had a little bit of a nosy at Newcastle's track before we go there on Sunday.

"Although I haven't seen them ride together yet, I feel quietly confident.

"The only thing putting a spanner in the works is the British weather."

One rider fans won't be seeing this weekend is Rasmus Jensen, who will miss the challenge matches this weekend and next weekend.

Morgan added: "Rasmus will be absent so we'll be using rider replacement for the challenge matches, which gives a couple of the other lads lower in the team a few more races."

Although Comets have tasted success in the Ian Thomas Shield in recent years, Morgan expects a tough weekend against a side she is tipping for success this season.

"I've got Newcastle finishing in my top six, in the play-offs at least and it wouldn't surprise me if they make the top four," she said.

"They have a tidy looking team with a lot of experience and people go there and find it really tricky.

"It's quite exciting for the crowd to see somebody like Robert Lambert, who seems to be making a name for himself.

"When one of our guys is in a heat against someone like him they'll be desperate to come out on top."
