Workington Comets just missed out on the Premier League Fours title when they were edged out in the final at Peterborough.

Comets had gone into the final heat all square with Plymouth Devils, but in the deciding race Brady Kurtz grabbed the lead and stayed in front throughout.

Kurtz, who hadn’t won a race all afternoon, kept ahead of Kenneth Hansen until the line to clinch the title.

It meant the Devils led the field with 30 points, one more than the Comets, with hosts Peterborough back in third place and Berwick in fourth.

Hansen was one of only three riders who made double figure scores.

The Dane had two wins and two seconds for 10 points, as ex-Comet Craig Cook (11) for Peterborough and Jack Holder (11) for Plymouth were the only ones to do better.

All four Workington riders had at least one win but the fall suffered by Claus Vissing in the opening heat proved crucial.

Vissing bounced back with a great ride in heat eight, to grab second place after breaking the tapes and having to go off a 15-metre handicap.

Then he topped that with a smart manoeuvre on the last bend in heat 10 to snatch victory from Peterborough’s Niolaj B Jakobsen.

That put the Comets ahead for the only time in the meeting as Cook rode majestically to victory in the next race and Ricky Wells had to settle for third.

It was Rasmus Jensen, who won his only race in his final outing, who got Comets right into contention again in heat 14.

He held off Plymouth’s Kyle Newman to bring the Comets within a point of the Devils.

When Cook raced away from the gate in heat 15, Vissing beat Todd Kurtz to send the Comets and the Devils to fight it out in the last.

Kenneth Hansen top scored in the group stage for the West Cumbrians with eight points.

His fine performance included a blockbuster final heat win which proved to be decisive as Comets progressed on race wins, having finished equal on 23 points with Glasgow.

Captain Ricky Wells scored six, Jensen hit five and Vissing kept the points ticking over with four.

Plymouth then eased through their group before Berwick pipped Edinburgh by a single point to join them and hosts Peterborough.
