After a Jekyll and Hyde campaign packed with highs and lows, Workington Comets owner Laura Morgan believes the club have made the best possible start to 2016 with the signings of Ricky Wells and Kenneth Hansen.

Comets finished eighth in the Premier League as the only team to go unbeaten all season at home, but missed out on a play-offs place after they collected just two points on the road.

The West Cumbrians retained the Ian Thomas Shield and Border Trophy but crashed out of the League Cup and Knockout Cup at the first hurdle.

Morgan said: "I'm certainly not disappointed with the way it went.

"We had some ups and downs as we always do and although it was frustrating not to make the play-offs, the last six or seven home meetings were absolutely fantastic.

"I do believe the supporters have been treated to some of the best racing in the country this season.

"To finish by beating the top team in the league and them to not even get close to a point was brilliant.

"Knowing we've got Ricky and Kenneth signed up is a really exciting start to next season's team.

"I felt that we were ending on quite a positive note."

Asked about team-building for next season, Morgan wasn't giving much away but admitted that Matt Williamson had expressed a desire to return in Comets colours.

And the Comets boss said she was delighted to have the signatures of arguably the club's stand-out performers this year for the 2016 season.

She said: "Kenneth in particular had been wanting to sign for weeks which is good to see.

"He loves a bit of pantomime and showmanship and I think he likes the fact that he is building that rapport with supporters. He's good for the team, club and fans.

"Ricky's season has just been out of this world.

"I'm so glad that we've got both of them back on board, without a doubt there will be a lot of disappointed clubs up and down the country."

The BSPA annual general meeting, which begins on Saturday, October 17, will make the picture a lot clearer regarding the shape Comets' team will take and Morgan said they hoped to have the side signed and sealed by Christmas.

She added: "I'm quite pleased they've brought the meeting forward a whole month this year because there's such a lot of loose ends which need tying up.

"Then we will know what we're dealing with and we can carry on team-building.

"We've got little game plans, we'll come up with teams and ask each other what we think but until the AGM we won't do anything more serious."

The club will hold its annual end of season do on Friday, October 16 at the West Cumbria Trades Hall Centre, on Brow Top. Tickets will be available via the club’s official Facebook page and at purchase points in Workington, which are still to be confirmed.
