Workington Comets starlet Matt Williamson will relish being back on a bike against high-flying Glasgow tonight (7pm start) after walking away from a horror crash at Berwick last Saturday.

The 21-year-old reserve was lucky to escape without serious injury from the crash with Ben Barker last weekend and missed out on Sunday’s impressive home win as a result.

But the gutsy youngster isn’t dwelling on his misfortune and after making his return in Comets’ first away draw at Redcar on Thursday, he hopes to help preserve Workington’s unbeaten home record tonight.

He said: “I just missed the home fixture last Sunday against Berwick so it was nice to get back on the bike at Redcar.

“I got off well on Thursday and was leading in my first race but the track was tricky at first so it caught a few people out and with my inexperience I was one of them.

“Yes our next two meetings are going to be tough because they’re against the top two teams in the league but we’ve got an unbeaten home record for a reason, we all go well around there.”

The 23-year-old praised the speedway education his Comets’ teammates have provided and admitted his determination comes from his family.

“I’ve learnt loads this season, that’s what’s good about being in that team because they’re all happy to help,” he said.

“I’ve had my little setbacks and obviously what happened at Berwick wasn’t even my fault.

“When you look at the two crashes I’ve had they were quite bad but I’ve always been quite a tough guy, my dad and grandad made sure I always just got straight up and didn’t feel sorry for myself.”

Williamson has impressed this season with his battling style and has never been embarrassed by more experienced riders, even getting the better of a few.

He said: “What’s been good this year is that I haven’t ever been off the pace.

“Last season was too early but this year I’ve been there and it’s only been little mistakes that have cost me.

“I love Workington and to be fair if they do want me back then I would like to come because they’ve given me that break.”
