West Cumbrian speedway stars Craig Cook and Dan Bewley top the bill for the Cumberland Pairs Championship tomorrow night (7pm start).

Workington Comets have organised the event, which is the brainchild of co-promoter Steve Whitehead, to give their riders valuable track time at the Zebra Claims Stadium.

Each pair is made up of an established high-scorer and a less-experienced rider for a competitive field.

Great Britain rider Cook, of Cleator, and Maryport prospect Bewley will link-up for the event.

Fan favourites Kenneth Hansen and Matt Williamson form one pair, with skipper Ricky Wells and ex-Comet Simon Lambert another.

The other three pairs are Claus Vissing with Mason Campton, Newcastle ace Steve Worrall with Adam Roynon and Redcar reserve Hugh Skidmore with Rasmus Jensen.

Comets owner Laura Morgan said: "We didn't have a meeting again this weekend and to be fair to Steve [Whitehead, co-promoter], he came up with the idea.

"I'm really excited about it because it's something different.

"If it's successful we'd like to make it an annual thing.

"We've got what we think is a competitive line-up and I wouldn't like to put my money on anyone, it's that close.

"I'm sure there'll be some brilliant racing and all the riders are really looking forward to it."

Points will be awarded in the Premier League Pairs format of four for a win, three for second, two for third and none for last, placing the emphasis on teamwork.
