Workington Comets mauled Sheffield Tigers as they romped to their biggest winning margin of the season in a dominant 56-33 home victory.

Comets remain the only unbeaten side at home in the Premier League after the win, which saw every rider bar Matt Williamson win a race, while the plucky youngster had been leading when he fell in heat two.

It was a dream start at No1 as Wells set his fastest time of the season and was just one tenth of a second off being the quickest Comet this year. The American looked untouchable as he hit the front with Tigers guest King straight on him, while Harrison fell to the back as Tigers new boy Castagna gradually pulled away.

A super start for Williamson saw him explode away from the gates in heat two before a sickening fall and collision with Bates on the second lap. It was a miracle but both riders were straight on their feet before Bates withdrew from the meeting.

Sheffield debutant Klindt made a disappointing start to his Tigers career with a last finish in heat three, but his teammate Bellego produced a stunning ride to get the better of Bach and Hansen and share the points.

Bellego shot to the front with Sissis at his heels, but Howarth was quick to split the pair and set his sights on the leader. The Mancunian produced one of the passes of the season up the inside of the Tiger before his teammate Wethers upstaged him with an even better pair on first Sissis then Bellego to seal a sensational 5-1.

Bach hit the front before Hansen and King swept either side of him on the back straight. The skipper got close but couldn’t pass the Tiger while his partner Hansen was a mere spec in the distance as he smashed the fastest time of the season in show-stopping style.

Harrison wrestled his way past Sissis to take third on the first bend while Wells could only admire the impressive King out front in heat six for another 3-3.

Wethers was drafted in for Williamson in heat seven after the latter touched the tapes, and it proved to be the right choice as he got the better of Bellego to take third. Klindt made the start and Howarth couldn’t reel in the Tiger as it was settled with another draw.

And there was further delight in heat 11 as Wells and Harrison cruised around in spectacular fashion to deny Klindt double points on a tactical ride.

Howarth shut the door on King out of the first bend but Castagna swept around the outside unnoticed to clinch the lead. The tenacious Comet tried to close the gap on the first bend of the second lap but span out and narrowly avoided a collision with the onrushing King.

Castagna was rueing his luck after his lightning ride came to a premature end, but the Italian made his line work again, this time backed up by his teammate as Williamson couldn’t get near the Tigers.

Heat 13 was worth the admission price alone, Howarth and Wells trading places out front with the never-say-die King breathing down their necks all the way and stealing second place on the final bend.

The impressive Wethers was back in action again in the penultimate heat as Williamson withdrew from the meeting, but it was Hansen once again who proved to be the star of the show with a jaw-dropping pass to win ahead of his teammate and Klindt.

Only pride was on the line in the final heat as Howarth slipped to the front past King before Bach catapulted past him and King followed through. The dynamic Sheffield guest cut through the hosts like a knife through butter and romped home for a final heat draw, but it was of little consolation to the visitors who had been battered by the home side in their biggest win of the season.
