Workington Comets owner Laura Morgan is struggling to pick a winner from the strong field for tomorrow’s season-opening Cumberland Open Championship.

The event is an individual competition (7pm start) which will see the seven current Comets riders go up against last season’s Workington captain Ricky Wells, Nicolai Klindt, Nathan Greaves, Tero Aarnio, Ben Barker, Ulrich Ostergaard, Nick Morris, Josh Auty and Charles Wright over 20 heats.

Morgan said: “I am really looking forward to the new season and this has all the makings of a fantastic evening to get the new campaign off to an exciting start and I am sure that the supporters will enjoy the racing that these sixteen riders will provide.

“Trying to pick the winner of an event like this is never easy and it only takes one mistake and there will be another rider ready to capitalise on it immediately.

“So anything can happen and it should be a great night for speedway supporters from anywhere to come along and see some great racing and support their particular favourite.”

The Cumberland Open was first staged in 1970 and was last held in 2013 but with no previous winners in the line-up, a new name is guaranteed to be added to the roll of honour.

In addition to the main event, there will be four demonstration races throughout the evening with Team GB youth riders taking part, including Kyle Bickley, of Workington, who has signed a provisional deal to ride for Comets next year and James Hitchen, of Dearham.
