The future of Workington Comets will be revealed in the coming days after a major revamp of British speedway was announced.

The British Speedway Promoters Association has rebranded the Elite League and Premier League as the Speedway Great Britain Premiership and Championship.

Workington are listed to compete in the Championship, subject to confirmation.

In a statement, the club said: "We have a few things that need to fall in place before we can fully commit to running in 2017, work is going on behind the scenes constantly and we are hopeful of making a formal announcement over the weekend or early next week.

"Overall, the BSPA AGM was very positive and the revamp of the leagues makes British speedway a more sellable product as well as more stable and viable."

Both Rye House and Somerset will move into the top flight, while promotion and relegation has been introduced between the two divisions.

The winners of the Championship play-offs will race the Premiership’s bottom club to decide who rides in the top-flight.

Last season's Premier League rules and race format will be used.

Teams will race each other twice home and twice away, with the top four sides progressing to the play-offs.

And the season will start with Knockout Cup meetings at both levels, with Comets facing a preliminary tie against Newcastle if they run, with the winner taking on Glasgow in the first round.

Championship clubs must include a British youngster with a three-point average, with a 40-point team-building limit, and any rider who hasn’t achieved a three-point average will come in on a minimum of 2.

No team changes will be permitted after July 31.

The Championship Riders' Individual meeting will be held at Glasgow, while the Pairs and Fours will stay at Somerset and Peterborough respectively.

Meanwhile, the club's end-of-season do will be held at West Cumbria Trades Hall Centre, on Brow Top, tonight.
