Workington Comets owner Laura Morgan wants the Zebra Claims Stadium to become a fortress as her side chase a play-off spot.

Comets have had arguably their most settled side of the season since starlet Matt Williamson replaced Nicki Barrett last month, with the stability paying off in crucial wins over Newcastle and Peterborough in recent weeks.

They were due to travel to play-off hopefuls Ipswich last night without Matt Williamson, who hopes to return when Somerset visit the Zebra Claims Stadium tomorrow (7pm start).

The West Cumbrians then complete their weekend with a trip to Newcastle on Sunday.

And Morgan believes maintaining their unbeaten home form will be key in pushing for the play-offs.

She said: “When you’ve got riders in and out for injuries or other competitions it impacts on momentum and team spirit.

“We seem to have developed a bit more strength in depth and the results speak for themselves.

“Hopefully we can make it a fortress at home, we’ve got to win that Somerset meeting.”

Workington stars Ricky Wells, Kenneth Hansen and Matthew Wethers are set to guest for Peterborough at Edinburgh tonight ahead of their Comets fixtures this weekend.

Morgan said: “It’s all valuable track time.

“Last week I do think all the riders came into their own and there was a little bit of shock to them that we are as good as we thought we were.

“Sunday will be Newcastle’s first home meeting since Lewis’s accident so it will be a strange atmosphere.

“What’s happened to Lewis Kerr puts a bit of a dampener on things and rightly so, it’s bound to make the riders think.”

And Morgan urged fans to be patient with veteran Rusty Harrison, who is still on the mend after a lengthy lay-off following a crash earlier this season.

She said: “Rusty’s still suffering. He’s been back to the doctor and is better than he was but he’s still hurting from his muscle wastage due to his crash in April.

“It’s just a time thing so we have to be patient.

“He was also tinkering with mechanical things a bit last week so that might be why there was a big difference in performance from one heat to another.”

Meanwhile, the kids-for-a-quid promotion will continue for tomorrow’s meeting against Somerset and the Young Lions speedway team are also set to make an appearance.
