Workington Comets rider Mason Campton hopes to be back on track soon after suffering a fractured collarbone in the first minute of his British speedway comeback.

Campton fell on the third bend of Newcastle's Brough Park on Sunday while leading, injuring himself in the process.

A lay-off of a number of weeks is expected in a tough turn of events after the Australian youngster finally solved his visa issues this year to return to Workington.

But the rider wasn't feeling sorry for himself this week as he kickstarted his recovery.

"It's devastating really but it happens, it's part of speedway," he said.

"Straight away I knew things weren't good.

"Kenneth Hansen, Comets' No3 rider, was in front so I jumped up and got my bike off the track so he could win the race.

"When I came back into the pits I could feel it clicking and I knew it was bad."

Comets went on to lose the meeting 46-44 in the final heat after the Diamonds staged a dramatic Easter resurrection.

Despite his personal setback, Campton was pleased with his first laps back in the Premier League and hopes to maintain that level of performance after his recovery.

"I know it was only early days but to make that start off gate four in probably my hardest race of the night and be in front was pretty good.

"Hopefully once I'm back I can keep that up."
