Workington Comets have re-signed Australian rider Mason Campton.

Campton, 22, spent last season in his home country after his visa to ride in the UK was revoked.

Victory in Saturday's Queensland State Championship means he now meets the criteria to apply to ride in the UK next season.

He joins Comets on a 5.00 average, as per the rules regarding new Australian riders coming to the UK, due to him missing last season.

He is Comets' sixth signing after they completed deals for Adam Roynon and Claus Vissing and returning favourites Kenneth Hansen, Ricky Wells and Matt Williamson.

Comets owner Laura Morgan said: “Mason was so happy and excited that he rang me immediately after qualifying for the A final.

“We had been following his progress ride by ride throughout the meeting and once he qualified for that A final it was a huge relief for everyone.

“Once his visa eligibility was secured, it will come as no surprise to anyone that we very quickly agreed a deal with him for next season and so we are delighted that Mason now becomes our sixth signing for 2016, leaving us with just one more place left to fill in order to complete our team.”

Team manager Tony Jackson said: “We are so pleased to have Mason back as to have missed out on yet another season would have been very hard for him and probably had a detrimental effect on his career.

“But he is now perfectly placed to push on with his career and I am certain that having missed out in 2015 he will be really keen to up his average next season.

"There is still plenty of improvement to come from Mason, and that will benefit everyone if it comes in 2016."
