Workington Comets youngster Matt Williamson is putting himself through a rigorous winter warm-up in a bid to have his best season yet.

The 23-year-old is snubbing the traditional speedway winter break to put some miles in on the track and fine-tune his racecraft ahead of his third year in the sport.

He has been racking up practice laps at Rye House and Scunthorpe and training in the gym four times a week as he looks to build on his promising start in Comets colours.

"I'm one of them who put 100 per cent in so I don't stop; while a lot of people are having a winter break, I'm still going," he said.

"I just want to keep improving to try and get my average up in the Premier League and I'm probably going to end up being a No1 in the National League.

"I always set myself good goals.

"I'm still relatively new to the sport and everyone says it takes a good five years to settle in but I'm going into my third season now and I'm hoping to do it a bit quicker than they say."

Williamson said it was an easy decision to commit to another year with Workington after impressing with a string of gritty performances in the second half of this season.

He said: "I finished the season with Workington and got on really well with all of the people involved so when they said they wanted me back it was a no-brainer.

"Obviously I was happy when Kenneth and Ricky came back because I get along with them really well.

"It does look like there's a really good team being put together but you can say that about a lot of clubs in the league."
