A mixed weekend saw Comets steamroller reigning Premier League champions Edinburgh at the Zebra Claims Stadium to earn their first league points before being humbled in the League Cup at Newcastle.

Every Comets rider chipped in as they dethroned the Monarchs 57-36 with a team performance to take all three league points with relative ease.

They then travelled to Brough Park where the West Cumbrians suffered a 56-37 defeat as they struggled to cope with a tricky track.

Team manager Tony Jackson described the weekend as a mixed bag despite a ‘fantastic’ team performance on Saturday.

He said: “We gave a great account of ourselves at Edinburgh on Friday and were excellent last night but then disappointing tonight.

“The track tonight was a lot slicker than it was when we went there four weeks ago.

“It really was from the gate, there was one racing line and if you got on that you were okay.

“In heat 15 Robert Lambert virtually forced Ricky Wells onto the grass when they came away from the tapes so I was a bit surprised the referee didn’t bring that back.

“I thought the 5-1s in heat 14 and 15 flattered them but we’re disappointed.”
