Workington Comets hope to announce their first signing for the 2017 SGB Championship campaign today.

Club owner Laura Morgan revealed they have done deals with a number of riders and spoken to many more since confirming their intention to run next year at last Friday’s end-of-season do.

Last week’s British Speedway Promoters Association annual general meeting brought sweeping changes to the top two tiers of British speedway and Morgan said it had felt like a breath of fresh air.

Morgan said: “I think it’s fair to say over the last few seasons we’ve had a considerable amount of bad luck and you do get to thinking what you’re doing wrong.

“I’m looking at this now as a whole new start where we can try some different things.”

After Comets’ difficult last season ended, Morgan sat down with her brother and co-promoter Steve Whitehead to look at where savings could be made.

She said: “We took this information to a meeting with our landlords, Workington Town, and went through the points and very positive things came out of that.

“What we decided was that we would try to work together more moving forward.”

Comets will now handle all catering at meetings, with the profits to be fed back into the running of the club to provide a major cash boost.

However, she admitted they are looking at increasing the admission prices.

She added: “Every club in British speedway really needs to tighten their belts and the riders are starting to realise this is serious.

“Everybody’s pulling in the same direction.”

Meanwhile, the club plans to hold a fans’ forum at 7pm on Thursday, November 24.

Further details are yet to be confirmed.
