Workington Comets manager Tony Jackson praised the club's staff after his side battled tricky weather to win their first home meeting against Berwick on Sunday.

Comets triumphed 37-22 in the first leg of the Border Trophy, with the meeting being called off after 10 heats due to persistent rain and worsening visibility.

They had been due to stage their first home fixture the previous weekend but that was postponed due to bad weather and Jackson thanked the track stuff who battled the conditions to prevent another rain-off.

"The track staff and referee did a great job to get the meeting on and keep it going," he said.

"Everybody's still in one piece which is the main thing.

"Considering the conditions, riders from both teams did remarkably well to put on a show for the fans."

Despite the wet track, the 10 heats which did go ahead were well-received by the crowd and Jackson spoke highly of his team and their performance.

He said: "Kenneth Hansen in particular produced some spectacular racing and Adam Roynon made a winning return to Workington.

"Matt Williamson also ended on a high after all the effort in his previous races only got him a point when he deserved much more.

"Simon Lambert was a good guest as always and again probably didn't get everything his performances warranted."

Comets will race their first competitive fixture of the year at Redcar in the League Cup on Thursday night (7.30pm start).
