Workington Comets No1 Ricky Wells fancies his chances against the league's best in Sunday's Premier League Riders Championship after securing his first maximum in British speedway last weekend.

Comets were due to race at Redcar last night and Wells will be back in blue and white tomorrow when they look to protect their superb home record as Glasgow come to the Zebra Claims Stadium (7pm start).

He will then line-up alongside the league's finest at his old haunt Sheffield on Sunday as part of the ever-popular Premier League Riders Championship, and Wells has his eyes on the prize.

"It's not one of my favourite tracks but I've had some pretty good scores there," he said.

"It's going to be tough but I look forward to it.

"I think going into it I'm riding in the best form I've ever had, I'm scoring high and things are going really well.

"You look at a handful of riders who you think you need to beat because they're going to be up there, but guys you don't expect can end up beating you.

"Obviously Craig Cook, Richard Lawson, Sam Masters, those are the guys who will be up there.

"I think I'm in with a shout."

The high-flying American has been a revelation this season after a frustrating 2014, consistently scoring double points and securing the coveted No1 race jacket last month.

Bizarrely, the in-form rider had never scored a maximum in this country, but that was corrected in Sunday's dominant home win as the star romped to 15 points in style.

Wells said: "It took a little longer than I thought it should have but it's great just to get one and move on because it was a little bit of a cloud hanging over.

"I had a busy spell coming into the weekend, riding for Redcar on Thursday and Friday then obviously Comets on Saturday and Sunday.

"It was great to get my first maximum but the most important thing is that we kept our 100 per cent home record."

The affable star said it has been a happier season for him and admitted he doesn't mind the travelling when he's scoring so freely at the end of it.

He said: "I've enjoyed this season, it's been a lot easier than last year.

"I feel like I've gone up another level.

"There have been a lot of busy periods with like 12 meetings in 13 days but that makes you appreciate the days off more.

"You don't mind doing the miles when things are going so well.

"Each year I try to improve and of course I want to come back to Workington next year and be No1."
