Skipper Craig Cook admitted he felt he had let his country down after Team GB missed out on a medal in the Speedway World Cup final.

Cook top-scored for Great Britain when they breezed into the final by winning Event One at King's Lynn the previous weekend, but they fell short in Poland on Saturday as he struggled with his setups.

The Workington Comets captain followed a third-place finish in his opening race with three lasts in a row as he battled to generate speed out of the bends.

Cook said: "I'm a very proud person and I do feel like I've let my country down.

"It's the only poor meeting I've had this year and unfortunately it couldn't have come at a worse time.

"I found it extremely tough, I couldn't get the bike working at all and when you're at a place like that where there's very little grip I didn't have the power in the right places.

"I tried everything, changed everything and there was nothing else I could have done.

"It's disappointing for me because I'd done everything right with the preparation coming up to it.

"I felt really good but at practice we just couldn't get it going."

The West Cumbrian had a rare off night but is determined to put the meeting behind him and focus on success with Comets and at the British Grand Prix later this month.

"It puts everything into perspective for me," he said.

"We just go back to the drawing board and get back to it.

"It's obviously a disappointment but we learned a lot from it.

"There's nothing we can do now.

"I'm not going to let it get to me but it's kind of hard not to when you're up on the biggest stage representing your country."
