Workington Comets manager Tony Jackson said every rider played their part in a composed 50-42 win over Newcastle.

Comets took an early lead with back-to-back 5-1s in the opening two heats and never looked back, rarely recording a last place to keep the Diamonds at bay.

“It was a fantastic result and a great team effort again,” Jackson said.

“We spoke before the meeting and said every point could be vital.

“I asked everybody to do their bit and they did.”

The visitors knew a heat advantage in the final heat would give them a League Cup point, but a feisty start saw Kenneth Hansen power his way to the front and ensure they would return to Newcastle empty-handed.

Jackson said: “I got Kenneth and Claus [Vissing] together and said ‘right, we need to get three points in heat 15 because denying them anything from the meeting could prove crucial’.

“They can only race who’s infront of them and we were too good for them on the night.

“I think the supporters appreciate that from No1 to No7 riders are chipping in with the points.

“The crowd was better, maybe because the weather was good.

“It really has been a stop-start season, maybe even more stop-stop-start."
