Workington Comets reserve Matt Williamson says the whole team are hurting after Monday’s humiliating defeat at Berwick.

Williamson was left frustrated as he failed to score a point in the 59-31 loss – Comets heaviest league defeat since July 2014 – and said he was not alone in being upset about the result.

He said: “We’re all gutted and the team are really upset with what was said about us after the meeting.

“As a rider you know better than anyone when you’ve had a bad meeting but we win or lose as a team.

“Hopefully Saturday is on so that we can start to put it right.

“What people maybe don’t realise is that if you don’t score points you don’t earn any money so every time we ride we’re trying our best.

“Nobody wants to have a bad meeting but sometimes it just doesn’t go your way.

“The team are all passionate so it affects us all, as well as the people behind the scenes.

“I’ve only been there once before and I ended up having a horrible crash which does stick in the back of your mind. I just didn’t have a good night, I couldn’t get the setup right so I felt like I had no speed.”

Comets’ month has been dogged by rain-offs and although Williamson also rides in the National League for Belle Vue, their luck with the weather has not been much better.

But the youngster said he was happy with his season so far and is focused on gaining experience.

He said: “It makes it tough when you’re without meetings, especially for lads like me who all we do is race so you’re sat around thinking about things and you don’t get enough time to get into your stride.

“It’s also hard going away, you see it when teams come to us and you do get a good home advantage in speedway, that’s just the way it is.

“I’m still trying to gain the experience at these tracks and on a personal note I’m happy with my performances away from home compared to last year.

“I’m really happy with my average creeping up although it’s taking a while and I’ve scored six or seven points quite a lot of times.

“Me and Adam get on great so it’s nice to have someone you do get on with and you trust on the track.

“I feel that with the whole team to be honest, we’ve got a good group of lads.”
