Workington Comets boss Tony Jackson said it was a case of what might have been after his side beat Redcar to finish seventh in the Premier League – just one win away from a play-offs spot.

Jackson said: “It’s frustrating that if we had won that home meeting to Glasgow, the only one we lost at home, we’d have actually been fifth.

“It’s a case of what might have been – and not for the first time – but we’ve provided a lot of entertainment.

“But, at the end of the day, all we had to race for was to try and get seventh and we achieved that.

“I don’t really think the fact we lost at home to Glasgow has cost us a place in the play-offs, we could have picked up those three points anywhere else.

“The biggest disappointment of the season was to miss out on the Fours the way we did, that’s the one that’ll haunt me forever.”

Jackson praised his riders for their solid scoring and entertaining racing, including a spectacular six-ride maximum from Kenneth Hansen.

A new-look Comets side had Adam Roynon in the main body of the team and Mason Campton dropping to reserve, while Rasmus Jensen was absent and rider replacement was used for him.

“Mason had one of his best meetings for a while and obviously his first at reserve,” Jackson said in the wake of Saturday’s fixture.

“He was racing one of Ricky Wells’ engines tonight and he said it made a big difference which you could tell from his scores.

“Kenneth was excellent and Adam did well at number two.

“They had a good guest in Thomas Jorgensen who tends to be good here.

“It looked like we might not reach the 18-point win we needed to finish seventh but three 5-1s in the last three heats did it for us in style.“
