Workington Comets are desperate to bring a long overdue league title to Derwent Park this season, according to manager Tony Jackson.

The seven Comets riders and Jackson gathered at the club's annual press and practice session ahead of the curtain-raising Cumberland Open Championship individual competition this Saturday.

Heavy rain the previous day ruled out any track time but there was still a buzz in the air as the group spoke about their hopes for the season.

Jackson believes the return of local hero Craig Cook will prove to be a hugely influential signing and help his team-mates fulfil their potential.

He said: "I am desperate for Workington to win the league and so is Craig and he would love to be part of the team that finally did that.

"If we could do it with three Cumbrians in the team, how great would that be?

"The influence of Craig, with his experience and winning mentality, will rub off on the other lads and he'll certainly let people know if they're not pulling their weight but hopefully that won't be necessary."

"He will help with the crowd and it's already created a buzz in the town," he added.

"We are trying to get Cumbrian lads in the team.

"There is a real feel-good factor about the place this year.

"If the team's doing well, it pulls people along. It's such a confidence sport."

The team order was also confirmed, with Cook at No.1 and new arrival Thomas Jorgensen taking the No.5 berth.

Ty Proctor and fans' favourite Adam Roynon will be at No.3 and No.4 respectively, with Mason Campton looking to make an impression at No.2.

No.6 Matt Williamson, back for his second full season as a Comet, will be partnered at reserve by Barrow rider Rob Shuttleworth, who is now a Workington asset.

The session followed the popular meet the riders night on Friday, at which West Cumbrian speedway prodigy Kyle Bickley was announced as a shock signing for 2018.

Bickley, who is a double Junior speedway world champion, will make his National League debut this season with Belle Vue Colts before joining Comets next year.
