Cleator are still standing in the National Village Cup competition, with plenty to look forward to over the second-half of the season.

On Sunday they travel to Hawk Green, members of the Derbyshire and Cheshire League, a club which is based in Marple, near Stockport.

Cleator produced a fine performance to win at Sacriston in the last round and once again will be taking a vocal, enthusastic “barmy army” to give support on Sunday.

Winners of the trophy at Lord’s in 2013, Cleator will be into the quarter-finals if they can see off Hawk Green.

After a rain-dampened Saturday programme it was good to get both CN Cup (formerly the Higson Cup) semi-finals completed on Sunday.

Cleator will contest the final against top south Cumbrian opposition Furness.

They were convincing seven-wicket winners of their semi-final at home to Dalton.

The visitors were 154-9 from their 45 overs with Tom Sharpe claiming 4-14 off his four overs.

Dave Watson (74) and Darren Clark (55) figured in a big second-wicket stand which took Cleator to the brink of victory. They had used up only 26.3 overs when thy reached 155-3.

Keswick, the only side to squeeze in a win the previous day, faced a stiff test at Furness when they were asked to chase a 45-overs total of 248-9.

Nathan Waterston, the Workington Reds striker, continued his great form with the bat by top-scoring on 71 with 62 from opener Lewis Gribbin.

Keswick’s cause wasn’t helped when professional Geeth Kumara was unable to complete his third over and the injury prevented him from batting.

James McGown took 5-49 from his nine overs for Keswick.

When professional Seth Rance removed the top three Keswick batsmen for just 10, and with no Kumar to follow, Keswick’s task became virtually impossible.

But the innings was given some impetus by a sixth wicket stand of 99 between John Phillips (66no) and William Atkinson (37).

They were eventually all out for 143 with a little more than seven overs left. Rance finished with 5-33 off his eight overs.

As far as the Premier Division of the North Lancs and Cumbria League is concerned there are only seven points between Carlisle, who are third in the table and Keswick who are third bottom.

So there will be plenty of interest over the second half of the season to see how Carlisle, Wigton, Cleator and Keswick jockey for position.

Two of the mid-table four meet up with Cleator hosting Wigton while champions and current leaders Workington will feel confident of making progress at the expense of bottom side Dalton who visit the Valentine Ground.

Keswick face another trip to Furness, hoping to fare better than they did there in the Cup while Cockermouth travel to Carlisle.
