Cumbrian cricketer Ben Stokes has been named as the vice-captain of England's test cricket team.

Stokes, a former pupil of Cockermouth School, will support batsman Joe Root who has been named captain.

The position of captain became vacant after Alastair Cook stepped down last week.

Both Stokes and Root - along with bowler Stuart Broad - met with director of cricket Andrew Strauss last week.

Strauss said that he believes Root is the "right man" to be England's test captain.

He added: "I’m also delighted that Ben Stokes will take over from Joe as vice captain of the team.

"He has real presence and influence within the team environment that serve as a great source of support for Joe.

"I have no doubts that the responsibility will also help Ben to continue his rapid rise as a world class all-rounder."
