Cockermouth find themselves in uncharted territory – bottom of the North Lancs and Cumbria League’s Premier Division.

More used to be challenging at the opposite end of the table, the Sandair side find themselves two points adrift in the relegation position.

They were put there by Dalton last weekend when they lost by five wickets to them in the south of the county.

Scorer Geoff Minshaw, like everyone else at the club, is hoping the team can turn things round over the second half of the season.

He says: “The league has panned out as most people thought with champions Workington and a strengthened Furness being the two dominant sides.

“I honestly don’t think there is much between the other six teams in the league so I think it is still going to be very competitive to avoid the bottom spot.

“Last year Whitehaven were cut adrift and didn’t win a game, so I think they would be happy enough to re-group and come back stronger in the First Division.

“We don’t want that to happen at Cockermouth and we will be trying hard to keep off the bottom.

“I don’t think our group of players is as strong as it was because we have some good young players away at University.

“What’s needed is a bit more consistency over the second half of the season and we ought to be ok.”

But it promises to get tougher before Cockermouth can reach calmer waters as their next two games are against Furness and Workington.

They host Furness tomorrow at the Ray Denham Sandair Oval and visit Workington’s Valentine Ground a week later.

Workington still hold a six point lead over Furness after disposing of Cleator last week.

Callum Moffat went on to score 94 after sharing two decent stands with brother Kristian and pro Gajasinghe which yielded 85 and 74 runs respectively.

They made 238-5 and then Cleator couldn’t handle the opening home attack, slumping to 35-5 and then 65-9.

But James Rogers, who normally bats towards the top of the order, weighed in with a belligerent 39.

He had pulled a muscle in the field, came in at nine and smashed nine fours to get Cleator to 111 before they were all out.

Tomorrow Workington travel to Wigton while Cleator visit Dalton. The other Premier Division game sees Carlisle hosting Keswick.

In Division One Whitehaven were knocked off the top when they lost at Millom last Saturday.

They are now six points behind both Millom and Lindal Moor, but they clash tomorrow while Whitehaven entertain Seascale.
