Andrew Ireland set a new club record for North Lancs & Cumbria Cricket League champions Workington in a big win over Wigton on Saturday.

Ireland, 22, took nine wickets for only five runs in 8.2 overs as Wigton were skittled for just 22 in 70 minutes.

Earlier, North Lancs & Cumbria League leaders Workington, who won the title last season, had made 246-8 in their 50 overs.

Ireland, who spent four years in the Durham Academy, said: “I’m a bit shell-shocked really because it was as good a wicket as we’ve had. We thought we should have got to 280.

“There was a bit of bounce, which was good, so I was delighted to get nine wickets. I think my best before had been six.”

Ireland, who only conceded five runs – three of which were wides – now has the best bowling figures in the club’s history.

“Matthew Lowden had got the Wigton opener Mike Slack early on. I never had the chance to bowl at him and it would have been rather special to get all 10 – but I’m not complaining,” said Ireland.

Furness won the County Cup final at Cleator on Sunday, after bowling Carlisle out for 99.

Furness had batted first, making 135-9.
