Netherhall do the treble

NETHERHALL have retained their Tesco Cumberland League premiership title after beating closest rivals Aspatria.

The Maryport side also got the better of Aspatria in the Crest Team Wear Conway Cup final on Monday.

And on Wednesday night Netherhall beat Frizington Whitestar in the Peter Dawson Benevolent Cup final. (See back page for details)

In the league Netherhall clinched the premier title when they defeated Aspatria 1-0 with a goal from Chris Dawes.

On Bank Holiday Monday afternoon the two sides met again in the Crest Team Wear Conway Cup final at Borough Park.

Aspatria took the lead as Mark Laidlow fired home past stand in keeper Tom Shepherd from a Darryl Creighton cross.

David Towers limped out of the action on 41 minutes as Netherhall ended the half with only 10 players on the field, manager Billy Gilmour was furious asking the ref to be vigilant a bit more.

Dean Scholey replaced Towers and on 51 minutes Mark Smith equalised from the penalty spot.

Both sides had chances to score again but only Netherhall’s Andrew Lowes was able to find the back of the net.

Another final was played at Borough Park on Monday, the AP & J Brown Builders Divisional Cup final, which was an 11-goal thriller that ended Cleator Moor Celtic 7 Frizington 4.

Frizington raced into a 3-0 inside 20 minutes and were 4-1 ahead at the break. But in the second half Celtic staged a storming fight-back scoring six goals without reply.

In other recent league matches Cockermouth also won 4-0 at Silloth, Frizington beat Bransty 10-2, Cleator Moor Celtic defeated Windscale 4-0, Whitehaven Miners won by the same score at St Bees and Salterbeck failed to show at Mirehouse and they will be dealt with by the management committee.

Silloth condemned Hearts to division one next season with a 5-0 defeat and Bransty were 4-2 winners at Parton Utd.

In their Focsa Ken Glover Shield semi-final Wigton were 4-0 winners over Longtown.

Aspatria will turn their attention to the C FM Whitehaven Cup Final also at Borough Park on Saturday, May 10, kick off 3pm also against Frizington Whitestar.
