ALLERDALE has the best amateur football sides in Cumbria.
Maryport club Netherhall have again won Tesco Cumberland league which plays on Saturdays.
And Harrington side Portland have, for the first time, lifted the Sunday County Cup - see page 49 for match report.
And what’s more, both sides have also won two knockout cup competitions.
In fact, Portland, could go one better than Netherhall as they take on Moorclose on Sunday in the Workington and District Sunday League President’s Cup final at Borough Park (2pm ko).
Portland, who had already won the Workington Sunday League Cup, secured the league’s premiership title by defeating Yankees Bar United -see page 49 for match details.
Last Saturday Netherhall defeated Aspatria 2-1 in the Crest Team Wear Conway Cup - see page 49 for match details.
And on Wednesday night Netherhall added the Peter Dawson Benevolent Cup - sponsored by ISS Waterers - to their tally in dramatic fashion.
In the final against Frizington, Chris Dawes opened the scoring for Netherhall but Frizington’s Barry Armfield equalised with virtually the last kick of normal time.
It was still 1-1 after extra time so the game went down to penalties.
With minutes of play to go injury-hit Netherhall swapped stand-in keeper Tom Shepherd for Ross Johnston.
And it was Johnston who proved to be Netherhall’s hero as he saved a Frizington penalty to make the shoot-out score 5-4 to Netherhall.
It was appropriate that Netherhall should win the Peter Dawson Cup as he had for many years been the team’s secretary.
The trophy was present by Peter Dawson’s widow, Elaine.
