Frostoms in 16-goal thriller in Slovakia

AN OVER 35s’ soccer team from Workington has been playing in a three-team tournament in Bratislava, the Slovakia capital.

FROSTOMS: back from left Billy McGuire, Ian Lowery, Bob McGarry, Joe Clark, Jeremy Lihou, Simon Ward, Tim Linford, Steve Tordor and Brian White; front from left Alan Southward, Ben Hadfield, Tony McMullen, Richard Tordor and Mike Cameron

Frostoms, who play in the Cumbria Over 35 league, came second thanks to an amazing 8-8 draw in their second game.

Looking to record their first win on foreign soil Frostoms preparations for their opening game against hosts FK Rapid Bratislava were thrown into disarray when Ben Hadfield, Jeremy Lihou and Tim Linford somehow managed to lose their way from the hotel to the changing rooms even though the hotel and playing facilities were on the same site.

However Frostoms started brightly despite playing with only 10 men when Alan Southward played the pass of the game to set up Steve Tordor for the opening goal.

Frostoms then pressured the Rapid goal, Tordor going close on several occasions.

When the missing three finally arrived to give Frostoms a full team on the pitch the effect was quite dramatic - the home side scored two quick goals from captain Vladimir Petrik to give them a one-goal half-time lead.

Frostoms’ woes continued shortly after the restart when their keeper Ian Lowery was beaten for a third time by Petrik.

This seemed to inspire Frostoms though, Mike Cameron fired two powerful shots from the edge of the area inches wide and Simon Ward produced two first class saves from the home keeper Vlado Stedry.

Steve Tordor’s brother Richard came close with a chip, however Frostoms were unable to breach the Rapid goal and the game ended 3-1 to the hosts.

In their second game FK Rapid beat GSK 6-3 so Frostoms knew a draw would be good enough to take second place.

Frostoms started brightly with Steve Tordor firing in two goals in the first 10 minutes.

GSK replied from Vaclav Zitka and then Joe Clark scored for Frostoms to give them a 3-1 half-time lead.

However, all went wrong after the break with Thomas Kadlec giving Brian White and Bob McGarry a difficult time in the Frostoms defence and scoring a hat trick in 10 minutes.

Steve Tordor equalised for Frostoms from a pinpoint cross from Tony McMullen, Zdenek Stancl then scored two quick goals to make it 6-4 to GSK.

Tim Linford then pulled a goal back for Frostoms only to see Jan Sivok score almost from the restart, Jaroslav Vlcek then made it 8-5 to GSK.

Steve Tordor made it 8-7 with two quick goals and White scored a last gasp equaliser for Frostoms leaving four GSK defenders in his wake before firing in from six yards.

The draw meant Frostoms are still seeking their first win abroad. Hopefully it will come on next year’s visit to Switzerland, their 10th tour.
