PORTLAND, chasing four trophies this season, landed the first silverware when they won the Workington Sunday League Cup.
The reigning premier division champions had too much class for spirited second division side, William Hill, who never gave-up despite the 4-0 score-line.
Portland dominated for long periods and were 2-0 ahead half-time through goals from Kevin Holliday and Kevin Connolly.
In the second half Connolly went on to complete his hat-trick as Portland won with a fair bit in hand.
But it was a sporting contest and William Hill earned fulsome praise, not just for the way they stuck to their task but for the gesture of providing champagne for Portland to toast their victory.
League secretary Ken Bragg said: “Grasslot Welfare were splendid hosts and William Hill were excellent in defeat which made for a good day all round.”
Portland will now hope to add the President’s Cup, the Sunday County Cup and the premier division championship trophy to their collection.
In the league, struggling Miners Arms Broughton Moor played twice as the mid-week matches started on Tuesday.
They had mixed fortunes - earning a good 1-1 draw with Crosby and then crashing 14-0 to Dearham in division one.
Andrew Sharp scored the goal which earned Miners a point with Gary Graham netting for Crosby.
Dearham overwhelmed them, however, on Sunday with goals from Gavin Manchester (6), Tony Nicholson (3), Jason Ackerley (2), Dean Scholey (2) and Shaun Smith.
Oval Centre, also down the bottom, went down 4-2 at home to Borough FC despite a brace from Carl McCarten.
Gary Barnes (2), Ken Curwen and goalkeeper Liam Dowse scored for Borough.
There was one other game in division two in which Hall Park Hotel drew 2-2 with Letters Inn but the secretary has received no scorers.
