Defying the years

SOME of its players may be getting on a bit but a Workington soccer team has still picked up a county title - they’ve got the highest combined age in Cumbria.

Frostoms, with a total of 618 years, has been declared the oldest side in the county coming just 11 years behind the oldest in the country, Ecclesfield White Bear.

Power company E.ON, sponsors of the FA Cup, instigated the search for active senior citizens as part of its StayWarm scheme for people over 60.

Frostoms’ prize is a new strip worth £500 in which they’ll proudly wear when they play in the Cumbria Over-35 League.

Tony McMullen, Frostoms’ manager, said: “We may be one of the oldest teams in the UK but we still give it our all on the pitch. We hope we will inspire many other older people to use football as a way of exercising and socialising at the same time."

Frostoms’ oldest player is Derek Stephenson aged 66 while goalkeeper Gary Byers is definitely the youngster of the side - he’s only 24.
