Ryan McDonald has proved his doubters wrong to earn a new two-year deal with Whitehaven – after avoiding any more of the arm breaks that have plagued his career.
The prop arrived at the Recre at the start of the year without great fanfare but has been an outstanding signing.
“I had to prove I was worth another contract,” said the 30-year-old, who has broken the same arm six times in the past.
“My main aim was to get through in one piece, to show I could do it. I took a bit of a knock on the arm at Dewsbury and came off as a precaution. But since then it’s been as right as rain.”
Coach Ged Stokes has proved a big fan of the combative front-rower, who has made 27 appearances this term.
“He’s been a fantastic signing and had a tremendous season,” Stokes said. “The young players have so much respect for him. For him to be in there is massive for us.”
McDonald formed a formidable partnership this term with fellow prop Karl Edmondson, which is expected to continue next season.
“I’ve carried him all year,” McDonald quipped. “I can’t understand how he hasn’t been nominated for any awards this season.”
Pal Matthew Tunstall will also link up with McDonald in the Haven pack next term after joining from Workington Town.
“Obviously he’s played at Town for a long while and he’s got to try to step up. But he’s been their best player for a few years, and I think he’ll be all right,” he continued.
