Steve Menzies set for Bradford Bulls debut at Whitehaven

Aussie Test legend Steve Menzies could be set for his Bradford Bulls debut in their pre-season clash with Whitehaven at the Recreation Ground on February 1.

The Manley star – the second leading try-scorer in the history of the domestic Australian game, despite featuring in the forwards – bowed out of the NRL after touching down in the Sea Eagles’ Grand Final win over Melbourne in front of over 80,000 fans on Sunday.

And the Recre match is the first game for which he is eligible for Bradford, who have pledged to send a strong side to face Haven.

“If Bradford send a strong line-up including Steve Menzies, there’s no reason why several thousand people won’t turn up to watch,” said Haven assistant coach Les Ashe.

“He’s a fantastic ambassador for Australian rugby league. People want to pay to watch such players. And our lads will want to test themselves against the best.”

Menzies scored his 180th and final Premiership try in Manley’s 40-0 demolition of Melbourne. Only all-time great, winger Ken Irvine, has scored more tries in the Aussie game.

Ashe, in joint caretaker charge of Workington Town for most of 2007, has enjoyed his first season at the Recre and would be happy to return next term.

“I’ve been made so welcome,” he said. “I’ve been blown away by the fans. Obviously, coming form Workington, I thought there might be a bigger hurdle to get over, but the club has looked after me and I have thoroughly enjoyed it.”
