New Haven assistant coach Gary Broadbent admitted it has been a challenging welcome back to the Recreation Ground.

Broadbent, a fans favourite during his playing days in the chocolate, blue and gold, returned to Haven last month as number two to coach James Coyle.

And he is confident that Haven can redress the balance, return to winning ways and get out of the relegation zone.

"It is challenging because of where we are in terms of league position," said Broadbent. "But I am enjoying working with the lads and with James.

"We are trying to improve the team and then we can improve performances."

Broadbent admitted that the loss at the hands of Dewsbury on Saturday night was not in the game plan.

He added: "We didn't see the result at the weekend coming. The last few weeks prior to that, although the results may not have gone our way, the performances were not bad.

"We haven't been winning but we are not a million miles off. But on Saturday against Dewsbury, we didn't play well.

"But everybody has those games in sport. I have played in some and so has James.

"We need to learn from it, kick on and improve for this weekend against London."

A few faces in the Recre camp were still familiar to the former full-back when he returned.

He had taken to the field alongside the likes of Scott McAvoy and Craig Calvert and had a spell with Dave Allen and Ben Davies at Barrow.

But he is just getting up to speed with the attributes of the rest of the squad.

"The other lads are all new to me which I think can be a good thing," said Broadbent.

"I am in the process of assessing what all their strengths and weaknesses are and how we can improve them individually and collectively."

And he admitted he had no long term plans in the coaching arena, preferring to take it one season at a time.

"I wouldn't be doing this now if it wasn't for James. It was only through him that I got involved here," he said.

"I don't really have any big plans to say by this time next year I want to be somewhere, I will just see how this season goes first."

And for now, his only goal is to head to London with Haven this weekend and try to return with a win to help lift them out of the danger zone.
