Whitehaven prop Richie Beaumont says he was honoured to have been selected as captain for Saturday’s 40-16 win over London just days after signing a new deal at the club.

Beaumont joined Haven on-loan from Leigh earlier this year and was then released from his contract to stay at The Recreation Ground during the Super 8s.

He then put pen to paper on a deal for the 2016 season last weekend and was then named by head coach James Coyle as captain in place of the injured Scott McAvoy.

“I’m honoured to have been picked as captain,” Beaumont said.

“There’s a few boys in the team that I thought could also step up to the mark.

“So I wanted to go out there and put in a big performance and it makes it special that we got the win.”

Since joining Whitehaven earlier this year Beaumont says that he has rediscovered his love for the game after admitting he had considered quitting the sport.

“I’m really happy with how things are going,” he continued. “In the past I’ve had a few injuries and been in a bit of a dark place, and I was in a bit of a dark place at Leigh.

“Then I came to Whitehaven and I’ve really enjoyed it – I think that’s half the battle.

“I’ve really got on with Coyley and the lads and gelled straight away, so it was an easy decision for me when I was offered the deal.

“I had been thinking about stopping playing. When you’re not enjoying it, it’s the worst game to play, but I’ve got the enjoyment back.

“The boys are great and Coyley and Will [Peter Williams] are great coaches.

“They’re up there with the best and the club’s going places.

“They’ve made some good signings for next year and those played a part in me signing again.

“I’ve been unlucky with injuries in the past but I’ve not had any setbacks since I came here.

“When any player has potential and they’ve got games under their belt then the sky’s the limit.”
