Whitehaven winger Craig Calvert believes that his side could go on and win the Championship Shield if they can overhaul their rivals Workington Town in the table and finish in the final play-off spot.

After their 42-30 win over Dewsbury Rams at the weekend, in which Calvert scored a brace, Haven are just a point behind fourth-placed Workington with just four games, including the west Cumbrian derby, left to play.

The top four teams in the league enter the play-offs for the Championship Shield in the inaugural Super 8s competition.

“I’m buzzing after the win over Dewsbury,” Calvert said. “It’s a great result for us and it comes off the back of a great win against London the week before.

“We knew if we’d go there with the right frame of mind we’d get a result.

“We’re now working hard and are getting out of the relegation fight and we’re now looking at that fourth spot.

“It looks like one to three are cemented and we’re really trying to push for that final place.

“If we play like we have been over the last few weeks there’s a good chance we could win the competition.”

Haven have won three of their last four fixtures, including wins over the top three sides in the Championship Shield.

However, Calvert and his team-mates had to come back from behind to win on Sunday after going 10-0 down in the first 10 minutes before the winger scored the first of his two tries.

“We’re not the best starters,” he added. “We shouldn’t be doing it but it seems to take 12 points or so to get the lads going but we know the quality we’ve got in the team and there was no panic.

“It was a great team effort and it was nice to get on the scoreboard.

“I could have had a couple against London but I had a knock on my knee. I struggled a bit against Dewsbury.

“I don’t think I’m fully fit at the moment but with a little bit more rest this weekend I should be better for Monday’s game against Hunslet.”

The Hawks beat London on Sunday to keep their slim survival hopes alive and they will travel to Whitehaven needing nothing less than a win to ensure they can still mathematically avoid relegation.

“They will keep on fighting,” Calvert continued. “But as long as we keep on playing as we have been there’s no reason why we can’t turn them over.”
