Coach James Coyle says Haven must win next weekend’s Cumbrian derby otherwise they are down after their latest defeat to in-form Sheffield Eagles.

Coyle’s strugglers face an almost impossible task to preserve their Championship status after a second-half capitulation in South Yorkshire, which saw Haven throw away a half-time lead at Bawtry Road.

Coyle says the game will be up if they fail to defeat Workington next Sunday, as he looks to turn around his side’s fortunes after a 48-16 defeat to the Eagles.

“I would say that we are done if we don’t win next week,” Coyle admitted.

“We simply have to win next weekend. Workington have won, they are doing the right things and picking points up. They are now putting pressure on us.”

Haven were the better side in the first half and deservedly lead at the break. A combination of defensive lapses and injuries disrupted their momentum in the second half, leaving Coyle to question his players’ desire to remain in the Kingstone Press Championship.

“That’s what I questioned after the game, how much do we want to stay up,” he added. “We spoke about what we wanted to do in the second half, and then we came out for the first set of the half and did the exact opposite.

“People coming off with bumps and bangs, you have to distinguish the difference between being injured and being hurt. I think you are letting yourself down if you come off when you don’t 100 per cent need to.”
