Scott McAvoy has hailed Whitehaven’s Dewsbury demolition job as ‘outstanding’.

The Recre club kept their slim survival chances alive with a stunning 66-12 thrashing of their Championship rivals.

Whitehaven looked far from a side destined for the drop to Championship One, and player/coach McAvoy said: “It was do or die for the club and to come out and put 50 points on a team like Dewsbury away from home is outstanding.

“I don’t think we’ve had a result like that all season. We’re usually hanging on or the game has already gone. We had one job to do which was winning and luckily results went our way elsewhere.”

It was a case of win or bust for Haven who needed to win all of their last three fixtures to stand any chance of staying up.

But they looked far from a relegation threatened side at the Tettley’s Stadium as they were behind for just four of the 80 minutes.

Whitehaven took an early 10-0 lead but were pegged back either side of half time as it looked like the game would go down to the wire.

Haven responded with 46 unanswered points in the final half an hour however to maintain their Championship status for at least one more week with a fantastic team performance from one to 17.

Although the result here was secured in plenty of time, most eyes were on the scoreline between Halifax and Oldham, the latter of which they need to lose all three games.

It was 18-18 in the latter stages elsewhere in West Yorkshire but Richard Marshall’s side prevailed to set up Haven’s crucial trip to Oldham next week perfectly.
