Whitehaven head coach James Coyle said he was delighted to have picked up two wins from three at the start of their Super 8s campaign after Sunday's 42-20 win over Dewsbury Rams.

Haven have taken four points from the top three sides in the Super 8s and will play the three teams below them and Workington Town, who are ahead of them in fourth place, in their final four games of the season.

“We’ve played the three top sides in the Super 8s and we’ve got two out of three wins,” he said.

“We sat down before the Super 8s began and set some goals and we looked at that as an achievable goal.

“We play Hunslet next week and they’ll be fighting. They have to win and it’ll be a tough game for us.”

Coyle was pleased with how his side turned around a 10-0 deficit after 10 minutes against the Rams to take a lead into the break.

“This week we talked about them looking for points off kicks and we failed to deal with it,” he said.

“We started slowly.

“The warm-up was pretty poor. Pete [Williams, assistant coach] mentioned that before they went out and we went out flat and paid the price.

“We maybe felt a bit sorry for ourselves in that first 20 minutes, playing into the wind, saying we’ve made a long journey down and Dewsbury being a big side.

“But we managed to pull ourselves together and built into a bit of a performance.

“I said at half-time that we were turning around against a strong wind and we were in front.

“We worked hard and had to stick together and tough it out.”

The Haven head coach said he was pleased with his brother Thomas’s return to the side as the younger Coyle set up two tries in the last 10 minutes to help Haven to victory.

“He’s been struggling with his knees this year and the grounds have changed from soft to hard,” he added.

“He’s been carrying some swelling and it’s been hard for him to go from week-to-week.”
