Whitehaven's latest amateur signing John Todd can’t wait for the opportunity to test himself in the Championship in 2016.

Todd, who signed a deal at The Recreation Ground after an exceptional season with Elbra Rangers, says he is relishing the challenge to prove himself in the professional ranks.

The prop is one of a number of local signings made by the club in preparation for 2016.

“I can’t wait for the season to start,” Todd said. “I’m really enjoying myself at the club and my first few weeks have been brilliant.

“Everyone has made me feel really welcome and I’m really enjoying pre-season training. It’s a completely different setup to what I’m used to and it’s really intense, it’s like a whole new ball game.

“But they’ve given me the chance to play at this level and I want to make my mark.”

Todd, pictured, revealed that he turned down an offer from a League One club to sign with James Coyle’s side.

“I played in the final with Elbra and a few days later James Robinson [Haven’s Director of Rugby] came round to have a chat with me and said the club were interested in offering me a contract.

“I was going on holiday shortly after so they gave me some time to think about it.

“While I was away I had an offer from Newcastle Thunder but thought that the travelling would be too much of a commitment so I agreed a contract with Whitehaven.”

Speaking about his former amateur club, Todd added: “It’s been a pleasure playing for Elbra.

“I’d like to thank everyone at there for their help and support and I’ve appreciated all the work they have done for me whilst at the club.”
