Whitehaven general manager Amanda Hewer has urged fans to get behind the club for the most important 160 minutes of the season.

Haven travel to face arch rivals Workington Town on Sunday with both a place in the play-offs and the possibility of relegation in the balance.

Haven are currently two points ahead of Hunslet Hawks who play Featherstone Rovers this evening.

Should Featherstone win Haven will be all-but guaranteed safety as they have a superior points difference over the Hawks.

“It’s such an odd position to be in this weekend,” Hewer said. “Because we are fighting against relegation but also for the possibility of a play-off place. The Super 8s has really brought a bit of excitement this season and every minute really does matter.

“That’s why the next 160 minutes are the most important of our season. It’s massively important for the club that the fans stick behind the team this weekend.

“We’ve had some tough results recently and we know the game against Town won’t be easy.

“But the players will go out there and give 150 per cent and we need the fans to give them that same level of support.

“We’ve seen in the past that our supporters act like an 18th man.”

In contrast to last year, if results this weekend don’t go Haven’s way they will still be in control of their fate on the final day of the season.

Haven travelled to Swinton on the final day of the 2014 season and were reliant on other results going their way for them to stay up.

“Tonight’s game between Featherstone and Hunslet is really important for us,” Hewer continued. “But it’s nice to know that our future in this league is in our own hands.

“Irrespective of the result in that game Sunday’s fixture gives us the chance to right a few wrongs from earlier in the season.

“I don’t think it matters how much you prepare for a derby game, anything can happen.

“I hope fans from both clubs come out and support their teams because this derby is massively important for Cumbria.”
