Whitehaven player/director James ‘Cotter’ Robinson could make his final appearance as a professional rugby player against his former club Workington on Sunday afternoon.

Robinson joined Whitehaven last year and will retire at the end of this season.

The prop forward is keen for his final appearance to be against his former club and is doing all he can to be part of James Coyle’s side for this weekend’s game.

“Being picked in the side would mean everything to me,” he said. “I was given my chance at Workington by Paul Penric .

“He had faith in me to put me out there and help me start my career in rugby league.

“I’ve been going this many years and I have a lot of appreciation for him.

“I’ve played with and against some legends of the game over the years and I’ll be forever grateful for that.”

Robinson’s first appearance for Town came in last season’s Ike Southward Memorial Trophy win in pre-season and the prop is keen to go out on a high this weekend.

“I’ll be going out there to win if I’m picked in the squad,” he said. “There will be mixed emotions for sure.

“We beat them in my first game for the club and I want to finish how I started with a win over them.

“I’m a bit nervous to be truthful. But I played a fortnight ago and have some game time under my belt.

“I feel as though I put in a good performance against Hunslet so I’ve got that to build on.”

Whitehaven are currently in a relegation dog-fight with Hunslet and Batley but could be almost guaranteed safety if the Hawks are beaten by Featherstone tomorrow.

“Friday night is a really big night for us,” Robinson continued. “If Hunslet get beat then we know we are in a much safer position and it could take the pressure off.

“We need to make sure we come up with a big performance on Sunday, we need to focus on ourselves.

“These are two big games and we could even be in with a chance of snatching that final play-off spot if we get a win on Sunday.

“We need to focus on what we can achieve this weekend rather than worry about the worst that could happen – we don’t want a repeat of last season.”
