Whitehaven captain Scott McAvoy believes there is more to come from his side ahead of Bank Holiday Monday’s Super 8s fixture against Hunslet Hawks.

Haven came away from Dewsbury on Sunday with two points after a 42-30 win over the Rams in which McAvoy scored two tries.

However, Haven had to again come from behind as they trailed 10-0 after the first 10 minutes and McAvoy believes his side picked up the win without playing at their best.

“I think we felt sorry for ourselves in the first half, giving away penalties and letting them in for tries,” he said.

“But we stuck at it and got some good tries of our own and I think half-time came at the wrong time because we were getting on top of the game.

“In the second half we were doing enough but we were below par and I feel as though there’s a lot of work to be done.

“It was still great to get a result at Dewsbury though.”

Haven have scored 40 points or more in their last two fixtures and McAvoy believes that his side need to work harder to maintain their current run of form.

“We’ve got a system that, if we stick to it, speaks for itself but it’s about getting into that groove as soon as we can,” he said. “Against Dewsbury we weren’t really getting to where we should have been.

“There were little bits of genius throughout the game that turned it in our favour and we had enough at the right time.

“We had a bit of a hiccup at Featherstone but after that we’ve had two massive wins against two of the bigger teams in the league.

“We’re now going to be playing the teams around us and we’re looking forward to Monday’s game against Hunslet.”
