Whitehaven winger Jordan Burns has been ruled out for the remainder of the 2015 season after picking up a serious injury in Monday’s 30-16 defeat to Hunslet Hawks.

A specialist confirmed on Wednesday that the flier suffered a fractured eye socket and cheekbone during the Bank Holiday Monday fixture and requires surgery to have a metal plate fitted to prevent his cheekbone from dropping any lower.

Burns will have his operation later today.

He suffered a similar injury in the league fixture against Hunslet earlier in the season which kept him sidelined for six weeks.

The winger has made 17 appearances for Haven so far this year, scoring four tries.

Haven will hope to have winger Craig Calvert back for this weekend’s fixture away at Batley Bulldogs but can also call on utility-back Gregg Wilde who made an appearance from the bench during Monday’s game against the Hawks.

Haven general manager Amanda Hewer said: “Everyone at the club is devasated by the news and wish Jordan all the best in his rehab.

“We look forward to having him back and playing with us next season.”

Burns is currently two years into a three-year deal at The Recreation Ground.
