Young Seaton blow away the opposition
Last updated 19:40, Thursday, 13 March 2008
This U16 match was played in a great spirit in awful conditions that prevented both sides from playing flowing football.
Seaton 3
Celtic 1
Seaton, who are all under 15 and will have another year at this age group, played with the gale force wind at their backs for the first half.
Johnathan Richardson opened the scoring after 20 minutes with a 30-yard thunderbolt.
Celtic responded with five minutes left of the half to make it 1-1 at the break.
Celtic must have been confident going into the second half with the wind at their backs but Seaton had other ideas and they dug deep to chase and challenge every ball.
Seaton moved the ball out to the wings and found space time and time again until midway through the half Jamie Bramley worked his usual magic and put through Ben Clark who cleverly lobbed the on-coming keeper.
Celtic lifted their efforts but were kept at bay by terrier-like tackling and a good team spirit from Seaton.
The game was sealed with 10 minutes to go when Richard Johnstone put an inch-perfect pass down the touchline to the ever-alert Anthony Zajac, who left the last defender in his wake to round the keeper and coolly slot the ball home.
This was Seaton's last home match this season and the lads would like to thank all the parents and supporters, in particular Joe Beggs and Paul Bramley.
Seaton 0
Bigrigg Bulls 0
A goalless draw sounds pretty boring but this U10 game was extremely exciting and dramatic from beginning to end.
For the first 15 minutes both teams attacked and defended in turn. The Bulls attacked on the break and Matthew Sempill thundered in a shot that was tipped around the post by man-of-the-match Bradley Gale.
Seaton came closest to breaking their duck late in the second half when they forced several consecutive corners.
The skills displayed by both teams were phenomenal, junior football at its best.
Cleator Moor Celtic A 1
Workington Red Devils 1
Celtic came into this U10 division one game against an in-form Red Devils team and both teams played a good part in a thrilling match.
It was an end-to-end start with both teams moving up and down the pitch quickly with good passages of play in blustery conditions.
Both defences were standing firm and Connor McAleavey was impressive in the Celtic goal. Red Devils dynamo Logan Potter was excelling in the middle of the park having a good battle with Celtic’s Greg Rooney.
Potter and Ewan Robinson were linking well but could not break down the Celtic pairing of Byron Todd and Scott McDonald in defence.
It looked as though it was going to be a goalless first half but Celtic gained a corner on the Red Devils’ right hand side which was whipped into the box by Aiden Kegg and up popped Rooney to score with a header.
Red Devils came out in the second half forcing Celtic back. Jack Parker came on and made an immediate impact with breaking clear and shot for goal but once again McAleavey saved well to keep the home side in front.
All the play was now in the Celtic half and in the 31st minute the Red Devils drew level with the outstanding Potter on hand to put the ball in the net from three yards after a goalmouth scramble.
Workington Red Devils were pressing on and tried several times to get the winning goal but McAleavey had other ideas saving everything that was threw at him.
The final score was 1-1 which was a fair result because neither side deserved to lose.
